Thesis Wrap-Up & Job News

Well, I just ordered 4 yards of custom fabric, printed by online supplier Spoonflower. Besides the fact that I'm currently having a panic attack because such a purchase cleaned out my bank account (poor college student here), I'm super happy because I'll finally be able to see my thesis come to life! I've ordered the rush shipping, so I'll be sure to post pictures of the final prints. It will be a surprise which ones I ordered!

In other (not so new, but new for my blog) news, I've accepted a job offer with Target for an Assistant Designer position in their Holiday/Stationary department! Hello, dream job! I start 2 weeks or so after graduation, and in the meantime I've been busy planning my move from Baltimore to Minneapolis. It's such a beautiful city, and Tim and I will have our first apartment, and I plan to be a real human being and cook meals and whatnot. SO EXCITED FOR LIFE!

ALSO, I have a new website! I'm still working on it, but it's at least up.

For Maps class we had to do a map of a subculture. I pushed the boundaries a little bit and did the subculture of Baltimore, specifically the accent, often referred to as "Balamerese". If you don't know the city, the shape of the words makes up the city area. I'm going to end up screen-printing this on shirts with the help of my studio-mate Sarah, a printmaking goddess. Can you guess what some of these words are? Try saying them out loud...

So I was missing painting for last semester so I did a tiny self portrait. In real life it's about 2.5"x3.5" so a little bit bigger than a business card. Unfortunately the colors didn't scan too well, they tend to be a bit brighter in person.

These are probably not the final colors for this pattern. This pattern is for a tote bag, and the pattern for the inside will be a variation of a phone cord. I have a thesis critique tomorrow and all of us in the studio are working long tonight! I think I may finally be done fooling around with the blog format too. (That is, until I think of something else cool!) Also, a new website is in the works... I built more than half of it last night and hopefully I'll have it up over the weekend!

This is a pretty simple pattern for my thesis... It's the pattern for a lining fabric for a tote bag.

For our Maps class we had to make a map of "somewhere we belong" so of course I drew my hometown, Bel Air, Maryland. Sometimes I feel like I don't belong here in Baltimore, and don't belong there in Bel Air, but I guess once I graduate I'll figure out where I'm comfortable. I added personal areas like Tim's house, and the parks we go to.

So this is a sneak peak at the cover of a project I'm starting for my independent study for my Hand Letters class that I'm a TA for. The book is going to be 5"x5" and a promotional mailer that I can send out after graduation. It will be full of hand lettering... as you might guess from the image, it will be "unsolicited advice." You'll see soon!

In other news, I'm also about to start a re-branding project, so look for that soon as well!

So I have this class called "Maps"... and in it we draw, you guessed it, MAPS! So this first assignment was to draw a map of a fictional place. I took some liberties with it and I feel like it worked out well.

So I know I said I was going to post something I drew everyday. Well, I forgot that my dad's scanner doesn't work on a Mac, let alone it's not even hooked up to a PC. So that was kind of a bust. But I did make these pins the other day. They are made out of balsa wood and have a pin backing. I had lots of fun painting them. I could at least take a photo, because I was surprised by my Parents with an iPhone 4 for Christmas! My parents are AWESOME (Love you Mom and Dad, if you're reading).

So... WINTER BREAK! So this winter I'm going to try to do a blog challenge for myself, and try to post some sort of drawing or sketch everyday! Or at least make a post about something creative that I did.

Thesis & Studio

So... THESIS. I ended up with only 4 pieces, instead of the planned 6. Also, in this process I learned that I'm definitely not a copywriter. Thinking up "slogans" is not my strong point. There was a lot of crazy points along the way, but I'm happy I went through it. If I could start over from the beginning of the semester, I would pick something entirely different. All in all, I'm glad I had the experience of figuring out what works for me and what doesn't. These are printed 20" x 28" (thanks to Nick Iluzada for printing them so nice and awesome and so I didn't have to deal with Costco and getting them shipped out).

Also, here's a picture of my studio (can you spot Chipotle, my rad headphones, and some 21+ beverage?) at the messiest point of the semester! FINALS WEEK! Tomorrow, I am going to clean and organize and scrub my desk, so when I come back from winter break, it will be ready for a new semester (my LAST semester!) and... a new thesis! Details about that will be posted later!

For my illustrating the edible class, we had to design a seed packet for a vegetable that we were given randomly. I got Red Kale! I love kale, so I was excited to do this vegetable. We had to send sketches (left) to an illustrator that my instructor set up for us, and she chose my favorite sketch. I'm really pleased with my final (right).

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Here is a first look at one of my thesis pieces! My thesis centers around mental health awareness and decreasing stigma of mental illness. This piece is about obsessive compulsive disorder, and how it can take a lot of time out of a sufferer's life.

In addition to thesis, I've been slaving away at my other finals... and trying not to fail my science class! I'm also fiercely working away on a project about the history of glassware for one of my academic classes, and it's proving to be very difficult.

I've got a lot planned for over winter break, including starting next semester's thesis. Hopefully over the next week or two, I'll be posting more of my work from this semester's thesis. It went in a very different direction than I originally planned, so a lot of my pieces are in partially completed states.

Station North is the neighborhood that borders MICA and Bolton Hill, and there are some great restaurants in the area! My first finished assignment for my Illustrating the Edible class. We had to do an illustration for theydrawandcook.com. Our class assignment involved doing a recipe that is linked with our culture/family or that conjures memories. I don't really have much "culture"... but every year my Mom and Mom-Mom (grandmother) pick peaches a couple times and make the most wonderful peach cakes! Peach cake is so much better than peach pie. I wonder if I should have actually drawn the final product, but that's the point of actually making a recipe, right? The surprise in finally getting to see what you make!

So, guess where I am? Stanford University! 2 weeks ago I arrived (by my first airplane ride EVER) in sunny California to work for the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth as a resident assistant. My job is to watch over and plan fun activities for my 10 amazing children (most from South Korea) that are math and science prodigies.

So why do you ask, am I posting this on my illustration blog? Well, I probably won't be posting any illustration for another 4 weeks. I don't have access to a scanner, but I do have my cell phone camera, so I guess crappy cell phone pictures might have to do for a while, if at all.

I am making work though! While the chillins are in class, I am working in a sketchbook. So when I get back to Maryland, I'll be sure to scan.

Thesis ideas = NONE.

So summer has been pretty slow. I have been unproductive. Except the other day I bought some new paints and practiced a bit. Last semester I ran out of paint, so most of my stuff was digital and playing around with new mediums. So summertime, back to painting! I wanted to paint a celebrity or someone recognizable, but settled on Neil Armstrong. He's pretty famous, right? And for now, I have not set up my scanner yet, so a cell phone picture will have to do...

Oh, and also, my website will be down for a while.

So I'm going back to my good old Bel Air tomorrow! Home Sweet Home! So I decided today (amidst my final resident advisor duties) that I would do a sort of a 'mini-thesis' this summer for fun! I have no job at the moment, so I figure that the time I am not spending finding a job could go towards doing something productive. So my goal is to do at least 3 pieces every week. Once I get home I'll narrow that down to specific things, but for now I just want to make this a permanent goal.

I've done a lot of thinking lately about my future, as far as MICA next year, being my last year and everything. Of course, everyone is freaking out that we are that much closer to 'the real world'. I'm super excited for next year! I'm also looking forward to this summer, even though I'll probably just get a ho-hum minimum wage job (not that I would kill for at least some kind of steady paying job right now). I think for summer I need to make a goal for illustration-making. I figure that I'll probably do some kind of daily fun art-making, whether that be hand-lettering or life drawing, or whatever. I still want to eventually draw every mailbox in Bel Air (I made that funny goal a couple of years ago, people thought I was crazy, but I think it would make a cool show or something).

Also, in addition to agonizing over 'real world' things, I have been freaking out over the direction my work has been taking lately. Slowly moving from all traditional stuff to more digitally things. I don't know how I feel about that. I'm missing my love/hate relationship with painting. Well, I guess that's what a lot of summer art making will figure out for me. Well, this is the longest blog-post that I've ever had, so I think I'll wrap it up now.

For weeks I've been working on this. I had very limited knowledge of Dreamweaver (still do!) and no clue how to get it up online. After troubleshooting the crap out of it, I did it! Way to be self-sufficient. So what does this mean, now that I have a place to display my new work? I can start using my blog less like a portfolio and more like a blog is supposed to be! A place to post awesome stuff! Sweet. I'm very excited and proud that I did it all by myself, only help from google when I couldn't figure something out.

This was for Illustration Concepts 2 for an editorial piece I was given on bad bosses. Nick, my "art director" liked this concept best, but I'm not sure how I feel about it.
